What do The Cobblestone pub, a bicycle on the edge of a sidewalk, a food truck in a parking lot, and a cantina have in common?

In this edition of Dinner with Art, we present the exhibition "Small Worlds" by Irish artist Mazzy Hollerich. With her keen attention to detail and boundless imagination, she creates iconic scenes that have endured through adversities, sustained by a supportive community.

For instance, in 2021, Marron States applied for a permit to build a hotel where The Cobblestone pub stood. The plan was to preserve the pub's facade but demolish the rest of the iconic establishment. Protests, petitions, and appeals were launched to halt this initiative. Ultimately, the proposal was stopped, but this hasn't prevented other pubs and restaurants from vanishing in favor of constructing offices and apartments that benefit a select few.

In Mexico City, the real estate cartel has triumphed. Despite the traffic and the lack of potable water, buildings and towers are being constructed disproportionately. Flat prices are soaring, and long-time residents are slowly being displaced. Yet, remnants of public spaces where communities can thrive still exist. One such example is the basket taco stand, which requires just a few meters of space—enough for someone to park their bicycle and offer tacos. These places lack elegance; people eat standing up, somewhat hurriedly, because they have to continue working.

We invite you to engage and reflect on these scenes that continue to thrive in the collective imagination of societies like the Irish and Mexican. Consider how food plays a fundamental role as a bridge between cultures and as a narrative of resistance.
